Exploring Buddhism – Kiri Vehera

Exploring Buddhism – Kiri Vehera

The Kiri Vehera is an ancient stupa located in  Kataragama , Uva Province, Sri Lanka. This stupa possibly dates back to the 6th century BC and is believed to have been built by King Mahasena, a regional ruler of the Kataragama area. It is one of the most popular Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the country and is sacred to Buddhists. Buddhists consider that God Kataragama is one of the guardian deities of Buddhism and the presiding deity of Kataragama temple hallowed by the Buddha. It is a pilgrimage town popular among Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and indigenous
Vedda communities of Sri Lanka and even to South Indians. It is 90km away and two hour drive from Golden Pearl Tangalle Beach and is definitely worth adding to your list of places to see!
