Another major attraction located in the Hambanthota district is the Madunagala Hot Water Springs located in Madunagala hermitage in the Southern province of Sri Lanka. A popular tourist attraction, the spring was first recorded by Leonard Woolf, British Assistant Government Agent of Hambanthota in the early 1900s in his diaries where he recorded the haphazardjourney through wild jungles filled with various animals and boat rides to reach the
Madunagala Hot Springs from which he took a sample.
The hot water is said to consist of 22 elements such as Sulphate, Nitrate, Calcium, Sodium, and Chloride. The elements combined with other minerals blended in the water is said to cure skin ailments, arthritis, asthma and a number of other chronic illnesses.Today four wells have been built surrounding the main spring with varying degrees of temperature and commercialization has taken precedence in recent years. Madunagala Hot Springs is approximately 50 km and an hour’s drive from Golden Pearl Tangalle Beach depending on road conditions.
