Hummanaya Blowhole is located in Kudawella, which is a small coastal market town in the Hambanthota district in the Southern province of Sri Lanka. It is the only known blowhole in Sri Lanka and it is considered to be the second largest blowhole in the world! It is truly a breathtaking sight to behold! Hummanaya is a natural blowhole, and caused when sea water surges through a submerged cavern and is thrust upwards.
The water fountain created by the geological feature shoots up every couple of minutes depending on sea conditions and the spray can reach as high as nearly 95 feet! Hummanaya has now been developed as a tourist attraction, with a visitors’ information centre on marine life and a viewing platform. A definite must see and is only a 15 minute drive and 12 km from Golden Pearl Tangalle Beach. Get the camcorders ready for this sight!
